School Tools & More- Now Until end of Summer 2011

With the school year coming to a close, Point Hope is encouraging students, parents and teachers to organize a drive to collect “school tools”. Instead of throwing away the “gently used” pencils, spiral notebooks, rulers, colored pencils, and calculators; collect them and send them to Point Hope! We will then distribute them to children who have NO supplies for school.

It is hard to fathom a child attending school with no paper, no pencils, no backpacks, but that is the reality in most parts of West Africa, Haiti and other developing nations. So instead of tossing the used pencils and colored pencils in the trash can, send them to Point Hope and we will ship them to those in need!

General guidelines regarding “gently used” are: PENCILS at least 4″- 5″ long with some eraser left; NOTEBOOKS with at least 1/2 of the paper left; CRAYONS that are long enough to hold; CHALK, colored or white with at least 1/2 of the original size remaining; BACKPACKS, RULERS, PROTRACTORS, CALCULATORS, PENCIL BOXES that are unbroken and usable. You get the general idea, if there is enough of it to continue using it, we would love to have it.

By supporting this cause, you’ll make a lot of children very happy, including yours, who will get to drag you around next fall looking for the newest and coolest school supplies for class. And you can sigh in relief knowing the ones you just bought last fall are in appreciative little hands eager to learn. Thank you in advance for your help! For an easy way to pass this on to people you know with school age children, see our suggestion below.
Thank you for your interest in helping Point Hope be a voice for forgotten children!

WANNA PAINLESS WAY TO HELP?? CUT AND PASTE THIS ONTO AN EMAIL AND SEND IT TO ALL THE FAMILIES AND KIDS YOU KNOW!

Hey Kids, how can you make a difference? Get involved & help collect “School Tools”… Paper, pencils, pens, rulers, etc.

Since school is almost out and you will be cleaning out your desks and lockers, you have an opportunity to turn your junk into treasure for someone else! Won’t you please be an Ambassador of Hope and Goodwill for Point Hope in Ghana, West Africa? Rather than throw away your used school supplies, collect those that are still useable and send them to Point Hope to make a difference and change the lives of kids in Africa! Pencil boxes, paper, rulers and calculators are in short supply in Africa and those half-used pencils are still valuable to the kids in Ghana.

You can also help give hope to other kids by raising funds for Point Hope this summer. Take the compassion you have for others and all your creativity to be a voice for forgotten children and take part in saving lives, providing purpose and restoring hope! Host a lemonade stand in your neighborhood, or a bake sale at your church, even ask your summer league teams to have their folks pledge a dollar for every home run hit or every run scored, every basketball shot made, every soccer goal kicked… Take this opportunity to harness your energy and be creative with a purpose!!!

Please send your contributions of “School Tools” and proceeds raised to: Point Hope, 5889 State Hwy 303, Suite 110, Bremerton, WA 98311

    Belleville “Tractor Trot” 5K Run/Walk: Saturday- May 7, 2011
In October 2010, the community of Belleville, Illinois, benefited from Point Hope’s founder, Delilah, as she brought her nationally syndicated radio show and artistic talent to “Paint The Town”! (http://fresh1025.radio.com/paint-the-town/). Now, as a collective “Thank You”, many Belleville residents are reaching out to Delilah and Point Hope by raising funds to purchase and ship a tractor and plow for farmers being helped through the Point Hope agricultural skills training program in Ghana, West Africa. These valuable tools will help men and women become self-sufficient and successful. If you want to participate in the run, download the registration form here (PDF) or click here to register online. If you want to help raise funds without doing the run, click here and look for the “Make a Donation” selection.

MercyMe & Point Hope Linked up at the Puyallup Fair!

Prior to the event, Point Hope volunteers and staff had the opportunity to meet MercyMe and Jeremy Camp backstage. Hundreds of fans joined together to show their support for forgotten children.

MercyMe pledged $5 of each CD sold that night to support Point Hope raising a total of $3,640.00

530 participated in joining links of paper together as an act of their pledge to Lovewell and make a difference in their world.

MercyMe welcomed Delilah on stage as a real life example of their campaign tour “Generous Mr. Lovewell.” Delilah poured out her heart for children whose voice has not been heard- children living in desperate poverty who cannot speak up for themselves. In the spirit of generosity, Mercy Me gave $5 for every album sold that night to Point Hope. $3,640 was raised – funding greatly needed for the shipping of essential medical supplies to our children in Ghana.

Following the event fans joined strips of paper together forming a 94 foot long chain. This visual expression of their support and commitment to join in being a living example of love and compassion in our world caught the attention of everyone, “I love this, sign me up” was heard more than once! In fact, these same fans donated $472 on the spot that night! What an incredible generous lovewell gesture!!!

Children living in poverty find hope when their most basic needs are met. Generous supporters like MercyMe and their caring fans give children the opportunity to escape the bondage of poverty and become contributing members of society.

Link up with Point Hope to show your love and compassion!

    Ghana Trip

Our trip this quarter will accomplish a variety of tasks. We are excited to be taking some new friends with us to introduce them to the work of Point Hope in Ghana. We will also be finishing up the details on the land purchase, hoping to break ground for Point Hope Village. The refugee camp is winding down and is scheduled for closing in the next 18 months, so we will also be working with PointHope Ghana to establish what our local partners need from us to help make the transition from camp to community; we want to ensure the most vulnerable (the widows and orphans) will have a home and be provided for without interruption. Finally, this trip will also to check on the progress of the programs throughout the camp.
